How to make introductions in Spanish

When we meet someone, the next natural thing that comes to our mind is introduction. Now the huge question is - how does one introduce oneself or someone else in Spanish?

       To introduce oneself in Spanish, the verb is called presentarse , while to introduce someone to another person, the verb is called presentar. The noun (el nombre o el sustantivo) is called la presentación (introduction).

   Here, the three verbs (verbos) that are very important are llamarse, ser y presentar.

Llamarse-to call oneself

Por ejemplo (for example) En la oficina (At the office) ‘’Formal’’

Pablo -Hola, ¿Cómo se llama usted?

            -Hello, what’s  your name?

Paula –Me llamo Paula Ramírez. ¿Y usted?

            -My name is Paula Ramírez. And you?

Pablo –Yo me llamo Pablo Ramos.

            -My name is Pablo Ramos.

Paula –Encantada.

           -Pleased to meet you.

Pablo –Encantado.

          -Pleased to meet you.

Fíjate (Note): Encantada is for female, while Encantado is for male.

Una situación informal (An informal situation)

En la Cafetería (In the Cafeteria)

Andrea –Hola, ¿cómo te llamas?

              -Hello, what’s your name?

José –Me llamo José. ¿Y tú?

         -My name is José. And you?

Andrea –Me llamo Andrea.

              -My name is Andrea.

Jose –Mucho gusto.

         -Pleased to meet you.

Andrea –Igualmente.

              -Likewise.

Fíjate (Note): You can use Encantado-da or Mucho gusto, depending on your preference.

Ejemplo con ser-to be (Example with ser)

-Hola, es  usted la señora García, ¿verdad?

-Hello, you are Mrs. Garcia, right?

-Sí, soy yo.

-Yes, I am.

Fernando –Hola, soy Fernando.  ¿Y tú?

                   -Hello, I’m Fernando. And you?

María –Yo soy María.

            -I’m María.

Fernando -¿De dónde eres?

                  -Where are you from?

María –Soy de México. ¿Y tú?

             -I’m from Mexico. And you?

Fernando –Soy de España.

                -I’m from Spain.

María –Mucho gusto.

            -Pleased to meet you.

Fernando –Igualmente.

                   -Likewise.

Ejemplo con presentar -to introduce (Example with presentar)

Fernando –Hola María. ¿Qué tal?

María –Bien. ¿Y tú?

Fernando –Muy bien. Mira, te presento a mi mujer, Marta.

María –Encantada.

Marta –Igualmente.
