Los pronombres personales en español

*Personal pronouns in Spanish*

Just as the name implies, pronoun is a word that is used in a sentence instead of a noun or a noun phrase. There are different types of pronouns, like: personal pronoun (el pronombre personal), demonstrative pronouns (pronombres demostrativos, etc.)

But today's post is wholly dedicated to personal pronouns (los pronombres personales).
Just like English, the Spanish pronouns are categorized into singular and plural.

They are:

Los pronombres personales singulares (Singular personal pronouns)

Yo - I (la primera persona del singular -the first person singular)

Tú - You (la segunda persona del singular -the second person singular) (informal)

Él -He (la tercera persona del singular -the third person singular) (masculino -masculine)

Ella -She (la tercera persona del singular -the third person singular) (femenino -feminine)

Usted -You (la segunda persona del singular -the second person singular) (formal)

Los pronombres personales plurales (Plural personal pronouns)

Nosotros -We (la primera persona del plural -the first person plural) (masculino -masculine)

Nosotras -We (la primera persona del plural -the first person plural) (femenino -feminine)

Vosotros -You (la segunda persona del plural -the second person plural) (masculino -masculine)

Vosotras -You (la segunda persona del plural -the second person plural) (femenino -feminine)

Ellos -They (la tercera persona del plural -the third person plural) (masculino -masculine)

Ellas -They (la tercera persona del plural -the third person plural) (femenino -feminine)

Ustedes -You (la segunda persona del plural -the second person plural) (formal)

Algunos ejemplos (Some examples):

- (Yo) quiero comer manzana. I want to eat apple.

- (Tú) tienes que dormir. You have to sleep.

-(Él) no come arroz. He does not eat rice.

-(Ella) canta bien. She sings well.

-¿Cómo se llama (usted)? What's your name?

-(Nosotros) vamos a salir. We are going to leave.

-(Nosotras) vamos de compra. Let's go shopping.

-(Vosotros) podéis cocinar. You (all) can cook.

-(Vosotras) podéis bailar. You (all) can dance.

-(Ellos) mienten mucho. They lie a lot.

-(Ellas) son inteligentes. They are intelligent.

-(Ustedes) ya pueden empezar la reunión. You (all) can begin the meeting.

Fíjate:

-It is Nosotras, Vosotras when there are only females in the gathering.
-It is Nosotros when there are only males in the gathering or in a situation whereby there is a mixed gathering i.e male and female genders in one gathering.

HERE IS AN INTERESTING THING ABOUT SPANISH LANGUAGE, PRONOUNS CAN BE DROPPED THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED A PRO-DROP LANGUAGE. FOR EXAMPLE: INSTEAD OF SAYING : Yo quiero comer manzana. YOU COULD DROP THE "YO"AND SIMPLY SAY: Quiero comer manzana.
