La diferencia entre qué y cuál

*The difference between "qué" and "cuál"*

There are many similar words; pronouns, conjunctions, with almost the same meaning in Spanish language which if great care is not taken will be applied erroneously in sentences. Qué and cuál happen to be one of them.

Qué and cuál can act as interrogative pronouns, interrogative adjectives and adverb (only in the case of qué). But on today's post, we are going to be focusing on the use as pronombres interrogativos (interrogative pronouns).
In English, qué and cuál both mean "what?","which?" respectively. And because of this close similarity, being able to differentiate between the two has always proven to be problematic both for the learners and by extension the native speakers.
To be able to differentiate between them, one has to arduously study it and practice it in other to master the use. That's why we have painstakingly listed some examples with clear explanations to be able to ease our workload as learners.

According to (Según) Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary, "qué" as an interrogative pronoun has 3 meanings (significados); the first one (el primer): "What?" It is used to ask questions like: ¿Qué es eso? -What’s that?, ¿De qué hablas? What are you talking about?, etc. The second one (el segundo): "What?" It is used to request for the repetition of a spoken word (para pedir que se nos repita algo): e.g. ¿Qué? -What?, ¿Qué has dicho? -What did you say? O literally What have you said?. And the third (y el tercer): "How?" Which is used in greetings (en saludos) like: ¿Qué tal? -How are you?

While (Mientras que) "cuál?" as an interrogative pronoun means "Which?" and "What?". "Which" refers to "one in particular" (se refiere a "uno en particular") e.g. ¿Cuál quieres? -Which (one) do you want?, "What" refers to "one in general" (se refiere a "uno en general") e.g. ¿Cuál es su opinión? -What is your opinion?

-Para más aclaraciones, vamos a tratar algunos ejemplos. (For more clarifications, let's see some examples.)

-1. ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? (Entre muchos). -What is your telephone number? (Among many) (correct)
But if you say ¿Qué es tu número de teléfono? from the meanings we gave above you'll see that this sentence is wrong since "qué" does not indicate or make room for choice making when talking about about limited options. Pero como principiante, este error se puede comprender aunque no tiene mucho sentido.

-2. ¿Cuál es correcta? (Entre probablemente dos preguntas) Which is correct? (Probably among two questions)

-3. ¿Qué es correcto? (Hablando en general) What is right? (Speaking in general)

-4. ¿Cuál prefieres? (Entre dos cosas) Which do you prefer? (Among two things)

-5. ¿Qué prefieres? What do you prefer? (en general) (Unlimited options)

¿Qué árbol te gusta más? (What tree do you like the most?)(entre todos los posibles o entre todos los que están a tu vista -que son varios-) (Among many)

¿Cuál/qué árbol te gusta más? (Which tree do you like the most?) (tienes delante sólo dos) (among just two)

¿Qué/cuál árbol te gusta más? What or which tree do you like most? (tienes delante veinte de ellos) (up to 20 trees)

¿Cuál árbol te gusta más? Which tree do you like the most? (hay solamente dos a la vista y quien hace la pregunta los señala o los mira con atención, y no te mira a ti) (just two trees and the questioner is possibly pointing at the trees)

¿Cuál árbol te gusta más? Which tree do you like the most? ¿ese alto? (That tall one?) ¿ese bajo? (That short one?) ¿el de flores amarillas? (The one with yellow flowers?) ¿ese que parece una escoba dada vuelta? (That one that looks like a broom turned upside down)....... (se están dando las opciones, aunque sean decenas) (there are lots of options for you to choose from)

¿Qué vino prefieres? (What/ Which wine do you like?) ¿tinto o blanco? (red or white?)

¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What's your name?) (de entre los miles posibles) (Among thousands of possible names).

¿Qué materias tienes en cuarto año? (What materials do you have on the fourth year?) (Son 11, pero no sé cuáles puedan ser)

¿Cuál es la tarea para mañana? (What's tomorrow's chore?) (Podría ser una entre miles, pero es una muy concreta sobre la que yo no estoy informado).

Fíjate:

-"Qué" se asocia más con clases, colecciones y generalidades (Qué is associated with classes, collections and generalities).

-"Cuál" se asocia más con cosas muy específicas y muy determinadas (While Cuál is associated with specific and determined things).

-Para objetos, cosas y ideas concretas, utiliza “cuál” (For objects, things and concrete ideas, use "cuál")

-Para situaciones, fenómenos, abstracciones y acciones, se utiliza “qué” (For situations, phenomenons, abstractions and actions, "qué" is used.)
